Calcibindcellulose sodium phosphate

How It Works

Cellulose sodium phosphate reduces how much calcium your intestines absorb. This reduces the amount of calcium in the urine, which helps prevent the formation of calcium kidney stones.

Why It Is Used

Cellulose sodium phosphate is used to help prevent calcium kidney stones when your intestines absorb too much calcium.

How Well It Works

Cellulose sodium phosphate usually reduces calcium kidney stone formation in people who absorb too much calcium from their intestines.

Side Effects

Side effects include:

  • A bad taste in the mouth.
  • Loose bowel movements or diarrhea.
  • Upset stomach (dyspepsia).

See Drug Reference for a full list of side effects. (Drug Reference is not available in all systems.)

What To Think About

Cellulose sodium phosphate also reduces how much magnesium your intestines absorb. You may need a magnesium supplement to be sure you get enough magnesium.

This medicine increases how much oxalate your intestines absorb. Too much oxalate increases the risk of kidney stone formation. Your doctor may suggest you eat a diet low in foods that contain oxalate, such as dark green vegetables and beans, while you are on the medication.
