St. Vincent's Department of Pediatrics is proud to announce the addition of Dr. Phyllis Wan to its...
The level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provides state of the art care for premature infants and other infants with special needs. Newer modalities of care such as high frequency oscillatory ventilation and inhaled nitric oxide are available.
The center is staffed by board certified neonatologists who work closely with other board certified pediatric specialists in the disciplines of cardiology, surgery, neurology and genetics. Two skilled pediatric cardiologists provide cardiac diagnostic services and are highly proficient in the performance of neonatal echocardiography.
Physicians, nurse practitioners and neonatal nurses create a highly skilled NICU team. This team has been successful in achieving a high survival rate in premature infants with a low rate of residual chronic lung disease in the survivors. This improvement in pulmonary outcome is attributed to the early use of nasal CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). This gentle method of therapy is often used instead of ventilator support.
