Saint Vincent Hospital Manhattan and Committee of Interns and Residents Reach Agreement
05/12/2006

St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan achieved its first collective bargaining agreement with the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR), the union representing fellows, residents and interns at the hospital. The members of CIR have voted to ratify the new three-year contract with the hospital.

'We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with the Committee of Interns and Residents on a new three-year contract that appropriately recognizes the hard work and dedication of our house staff,' said Len Walsh, executive director of St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan. 'St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan places a priority on its academic mission to train physicians beginning their careers, and the critical role they play in the delivery of patient care.'

The contract covers 347 residents, fellows, and interns. The term of the agreement is from May 1, 2006 to April 30, 2009. CIR and St. Vincent's negotiated a salary increase of 12% over three years that takes into consideration that there has been no salary increase for house staff since 2003 while negotiations for this first agreement were underway.

While the rental rates in St. Vincent's housing provided to fellows, residents and interns were not part of collective bargaining, the new agreement provides the affected individuals with a stipend that helps transition the current residents to the new rents, which are comparable with other academic training programs in New York City.

St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan is committed to providing excellent, comprehensive medical care in a warm and compassionate environment. The hospital is located in the heart of Greenwich Village and serves all of downtown and much of the Westside of Manhattan.

About Saint Vincent's

Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers (Saint Vincent's) is one of the New York metropolitan area's most comprehensive health care systems, serving nearly 600,000 people annually. Saint Vincent's was established in 2000 as a result of the merger of Catholic Medical Centers of Brooklyn and Queens, Saint Vincents Hospital and Medical Center of New York and Sisters of Charity Healthcare in Staten Island. Sponsored by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Brooklyn and the president of the Sisters of Charity of New York, SVCMC serves as the academic medical center of New York Medical College in New York City.

The system includes six hospitals: Mary Immaculate Hospital, Queens; St. John's Queens Hospital; St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan; St. Vincent's Hospital Staten Island; Bayley Seton Hospital, Staten Island; and St. Vincent's Hospital Westchester. Resources include over 2,500 physicians, four skilled nursing facilities, a system-wide home care service, a hospice and over 60 ambulatory care sites which provide a broad array of medical, psychiatric and substance abuse services. In 2004, SVCMC recorded over 92,000 inpatient discharges, more than 1,100,000 outpatient visits, and 640,000 home care visits. Its emergency rooms, which include three Level 1 trauma centers, received 255,000 visits in that same year, while SVCMC is the largest private provider of EMS services in the New York City Fire Department's 9-1-1 service. In 2003, St. Vincent's Midtown (formerly St. Clare's Hospital) became affiliated with the healthcare system.
