--Fundraising Event Introduces the 2006 Giants and Recognizes 2005's Players of the Year; ex-player Karl Nelson to Receive Giants' Alumni Man of the Year Award--
August 30, 2006, New York, NY - The 2006 New York Giants Kickoff Luncheon marked the 40th Anniversary of the Giants benefit supporting St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan and the John V. Mara CYO Camp. Funds raised from this event go to the John V. Mara Cancer Research Unit to conduct cutting-edge cancer research into new therapeutic options and expanded cancer treatment opportunities and the John V. Mara CYO Camp to provide opportunities for young people.
'We are extremely proud to celebrate 40 years with the New York Giants and to kick-off its 2006 football season,' said Len Walsh, executive director of St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan. 'Our partnership over the years has been a tremendous success, raising money for cutting edge research and positively influencing the lives of young people.'
In addition to introducing the 2006 Giants and recognizing the 2005 players of the year, former offensive tackle Karl Nelson will be honored with the Giants Alumni Man of the Year Award. Nelson was a Giants third-round draft choice in 1983 who played for the team through the 1988 season. In addition to his outstanding performances on the field, he is remembered for courageously battling Hodgkin's Disease in the prime of his career. The illness forced him to miss the entire 1987 season.
The luncheon was held on Wednesday, August 30, at 11:45 a.m. at the Sheraton New York Hotel, Seventh Avenue and 52nd Street.
