Early Intervention Program on Staten Island

Our Early Intervention Program is funded and regulated by the New York State Department of Health and, in New York City, by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.  This program is available to residents of Staten Island who meet Medicaid eligibility criteria.

Our program provides coorinated and comprehensive early intervention services to infants and toddlers from birth to three years of age and their families. If you are concerned your child may have a problem with any of the following tasks, our Early Intervention Program can help:

  • talking, understanding
  • walking, running, jumping
  • playing, listening
  • getting along with others
  • eating, sleeping
  • dressing, bathing

Our experienced, licensed staff will evaluate your child in your home or in a day care center or preschool.  All evaluations and services are performed with families, children and staff working together, and all are delivered at no cost to eligible families.

Services are delivered by a team of specialists, including:

  • A speech therapist, who will help your child learn to speak
  • An occupational therapist, who will help your child learn to get dressed or use a fork or spoon.  Occupational therapists work with different materials so your child can become accustomed to touching them. Your child will learn how to use small toys, such as pegs, blocks, puzzzle pieces and crayons.
  • A physical therapist, who will help your child improve in skills such as walking, running, jumping, and catching.
  • A social worker or psychologist, who is available to counsel families and work with parents experiencing difficult-to-manage behavior in their children.
  • A service coordinator, who is assigned to work with each family with early intervention services and community resources.
