Goal
To have all categorical residents participate in scholarly
activity (12)
Objectives Residents will understand the
concepts of:
- Hypothesis formation, Study
design, Sample Size (10)
- Assignment of study and control
groups
- Assessment or measurement of
outcomes
- Analysis of results including
statistical testing and error
- Interpretation or drawing

Residents will learn how to
perform a complete literature search. Residents will learn how to write a
scientific paper. Residents will organize and deliver an oral presentation of
his/her paper.
Implementation At the end of the PGY 1 year, residents
will be required to select a topic for their scholarly activity. Original
research will be strongly encouraged but the activity could also be an extensive
literature review or case presentation with extensive review. No more than
three residents can work on the same project.
Residents will be
required to read Studying a Study, Testing a Test by Richard Riegelmean, M.D.,
(published by Little, Brown and Co.) pages 3-90.
Residents will
select a faculty mentor, depending on the area of research. The department
will collect and distribute a list of faculty and active projects. At each
quarter during the PGY 2 and 3 year, the residents' progress will be
monitored.
Research meetings will be held
quarterly so that residents can share experiences and resources.
In the fall of the PGY 3 year an
abstract of the work will be submitted to the Program Director.
In the spring of the
PGY 3 year the completed paper will be submitted and the resident will be
required to present his/her work to the faculty of the Department of
Medicine. Prizes will be awarded to the best papers presented.
Papers will be submitted for
publication and to national and regional meetings of medical societies for
presentation.
The Department of Medicine will
publish completed scholarly works annually.
