Overview
St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan residents are exposed
to a medically, socially, and demographically diverse patient population,
thereby providing them with a superb experience ranging from ambulatory to
critical care medicine. To meet the challenges of the changing health care
environment, the residency program offers an enhanced primary care curriculum
with significant clinical experiences in the ambulatory setting. In addition,
the high degree of acuity of illness among the patients admitted to St.
Vincent's Hospital thoroughly prepares residents to diagnose and manage
virtually all problems relevant to the practice of general Internal Medicine.
St. Vincent's has a well-founded reputation of educating medical residents
resulting in a high rate of success in passing the American Board of Internal
Medicine certifying examination. Moreover, the education and professional growth
of our residents occur in a congenial academic environment where a commitment to
excellence is coupled with humane care and respect for the dignity of all
patients. Through its broad scope of subspecialty fellowship programs
(cardiology, critical care medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general
Internal Medicine, geriatric medicine, and hematology/oncology, infectious
diseases, nephrology, pulmonary/critical care), St. Vincent's offers superb
subspecialty training opportunities to graduates of its residency program in
Internal Medicine.
The Categorical IM program is a traditional three-year
curriculum leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of
Internal Medicine.
The Preliminary IM program offers a one-year curriculum
with emphasis on Internal Medicine and its subspecialties, as a preparation for
other specialties or for general Internal Medicine. Successful completion
of this year fulfills one year of the three necessary for eligibility for
certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
The Internal
Medicine residency program at SVCMC St. Vincents Manhattan is structured to
provide an experience and environment that fosters the development of future
leaders in the field. This manual describes in detail the specific goals,
objectives and responsibilities for residents in the categorical programs and
will guide the residents in their educational endeavors.
The Core Curriculum is a supplement to patient
care and is by no means comprehensive or all-inclusive, but is a guide to our
specific learning experience. Although residents will receive extensive
instruction by the faculty, they must aggressively seek medical knowledge by
active participation in all aspects of the program. Development of the habit of
additional avid reading is key in order to become 'self-teachers' and effective
physicians in the ever evolving medical profession of the 21st century.
In the words of Sir William
Osler, 'the education in which he or she is engaged is not a college course, not
a medical course, but a life course for which the work of a few years under
teachers is but preparation.'
