Ambulatory Training

Ambulatory Training
All Internal Medicine residents participate in an expanded and enhanced ambulatory care educational experience. The program is designed to equip residents with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high quality primary care.  The core of the ambulatory care experience is in the continuity clinic located in the O'Toole Building directly across the street from the hospital.  Each medical resident follows a panel of patients throughout his/her three years of residency and functions as the primary care physician for these patients. Residents have the opportunity to refer patients seen by them in the hospital, emergency room or subspecialty clinics to their continuity clinic.  The General Medical Clinic is structured to provide comprehensive primary care to patients.  In order to ensure access for patients, the clinic is opened on selected evenings in addition to morning and afternoon sessions. A 24-hour answering service is in place for the patients who receive their care in the General Medical Clinic.

A comprehensive educational program is provided in the General Medical Clinic.  All residents attend an ambulatory care seminar at the start of their afternoon continuity session. The seminars consist of a two-year core curriculum in medical problems commonly encountered in a primary care practice. Residents generally see one new patient and four follow-up patients per session, with variation in accord with seniority. Residents are supervised by a consistent group of attending physicians from the Section of General Internal Medicine for all patient encounters.
