Geriatrics

The New York Medical College / St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan Geriatric Fellowship Program is a one-year fellowship providing geriatric training to two fellows a year.  An integral part of the Section of Geriatrics at St. Vincent's, the fellowship provides in-depth didactic education and training in geriatric medicine across the continuum of care.  Under the guidance of our geriatric faculty, our geriatric fellows participate in interdisciplinary care provided on our Acute Care for Elders (ACE) inpatient unit, and conduct inpatient geriatric medical consultation on other medical and specialty floors, including the acute rehab, surgical and geropsychiatry units.  Our geriatric fellows also rotate through the geropsychiatry inpatient unit, and rotate with the Palliative Medicine inpatient consult team.

Our geriatric fellows learn geriatric assessment skills by following their panel of outpatients in our St. Vincent's Senior Health Medical Practice, located at 24th and 8th Avenue, with the support and expertise of our faculty, geriatric nurse practitioner, social worker, and nursing staff.  At this site, fellows care for many older adults with varying levels of frailty and learn how to address many geriatric syndromes using a biopsychosocial model of care.

In addition to the inpatient and outpatient practice experiences, our geriatric fellows learn to care for older patients in all settings.  Fellows have extensive training in several settings, including:  long-term care / nursing home, subacute rehab, assisted living and hospice.  Block rotations at our affiliated Terence Cardinal Cook Health Care Center provides an intensive experience in long-term care medical directorship.

Our fellows are actively participate in ongoing clinical research projects and quality improvement projects within the Section of Geriatrics.  Fellows are regularly present their work at local geriatric meetings (Metropolitan Area Geriatrics Society - MAGS) and at national meetings (American Geriatrics Society - AGS) yearly.

Applications are accepted for review through ERAS.  For more information, please call (212) 604-2191.
