Planned Giving Defined
Planned giving is a philanthropic tool that enables you to support Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers' future while also fulfilling your individual and/or family's financial needs and objectives. Gifts through wills are an excellent way to leave a legacy at St. Vincent's, but there are many other options available as well. We can work with you to tailor these ways of giving, which are outlined below, to best suit your intentions and designate your gift toward the St. Vincent's entity most important to you.

St. Vincent's First Facility: A Rented Brownstone on East 13th Street, 1849-1856

Making a Gift by Will
You may wish to preserve your current income but also make a gift to St. Vincent's. You can accomplish both goals by naming St. Vincent's in your will. Your gift can be a specific dollar amount, specific assets, a percentage of your estate, or a residue of your estate. This kind of gift can have the financial benefit of reducing estate taxes.

Planned Giving Options
Not all planned gifts are in the form of wills. Other planned giving options allow you and your family to receive financial and tax benefits while providing support for the hospital. These options include:
ØCharitable Remainder Trusts; ØCharitable Lead Trusts; ØGifts of Life Insurance; ØGifts of Retirement Plan Assets; and ØGifts of Real Estate. |

...Legal Update...
As of October 2008 federal lawmakers reinstated a statute giving preferential tax treatment to charitable donations made through Individuals Retirement Accounts (IRAs). This law allows taxpayers over age 70 ½ to make tax- free distributions from IRAs or Roth IRAs directly to Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers up to $100,000 annually. It is retroactively effective back to January 2008 and remains in force through December 2009.

The Governor Alfred E. Smith Legacy Society
Alfred E. Smith, four-time Governor of New York, rose from the sidewalks of Manhattan's Lower East Side to prominence in public life and esteem in the hearts of many Americans. His dynamic career led him to distinction in politics, religous life, and philanthropy. During his lifetime, Governor Smith generously supported St. Vincent's Hospital where Cardinal Spellman established an annual dinner in his honor and dedicated the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Building in his name.

To join The Governor Alfred E. Smith Legacy Society simply inform the development office you have included St. Vincent's in your estate plans. Your gift can be general in nature or designated toward the St. Vincent's entity closest to your heart. In recognition of your membership, you will receive a specially designed St. Vincent's pin, recognition in the St. Vincent's annual report, and invitations to all donor events, including an annual tea for The Governor's Society members.
