ABOUT MARISA:
Three weeks before she was to be married, Marisa Acocella Marchetto, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was also uninsured at the time... A successful cartoonist, routinely published in magazines like The New Yorker and Glamour, Marisa seized a unique opportunity to share her story and experiences, while encouraging others afflicted by this terrible disease. On the heels of her triumphant bout with breast cancer, Marisa published the inspiring graphic memoir Cancer Vixen. Through her own unique illustrations and taboo-breaking dialogue Marisa tells her true story from diagnosis to cure and every challenging step in between.
Building on the popularity of her memoir and desire to help others in their battle with breast cancer, Marisa founded the Cancer Vixen Fund at St. Vincent's Hospital. The Cancer Vixen Fund, supported by a percentage of proceeds from her book and chic New York fundraising events, provides crucial breast health services to uninsured women. Marisa is passionate about the Cancer Vixen Fund and the services it provides because she knows the difference early detection can make in the fight against cancer. To date, the fund has helped countless women receive mammograms and other breast health services that they would have otherwise never received.
Today Marisa is grateful to be happily married and healthy. She is now working on her third graphic novel, which thankfully is fiction, and not about cancer. Her dream is that one day we will all be cancer free, and she will not have to write a sequel to Cancer Vixen any time soon.
