Inpatient Unit and Hospice in the Nursing Home

The Saint Vincent's Pax Christi Hospice Inpatient Unit

The 45-bed Pax Christi Hospice inpatient unit, the former Cabrini Hospice, offers a serene and comforting home-like environment for patients and their families. Designed by the internationally known artist and curator E. Jay Weiss, a long-time hospice volunteer, the unit features an art collection with many works donated by patients and patients' families. It is a place in which families and patients can find comfort, and where the end of life can come with family and friends together. It has enjoyed the generous support of New York's arts and performing arts communities over the years, and brings a heritage and tradition very much in keeping with the Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers mission and values.

The inpatient unit, conveniently located at 227 East 19th Street in Manhattan, in the former Cabrini Medical Center building, provides short-term acute care to patients until they can return to their homes to receive home-care hospice services, or until arrangements can be made for continuing long-term care. Services include...

  • 24-hour monitoring of symptoms
  • Adjustment of medications for pain and other symptoms
  • Evaluation of sudden change in condition
  • Relief of respiratory distress
  • Stabilization of restlessness, agitation or confusion
  • Respite care for up to five days to temporarily relieve caregivers of direct responsibility

Patients receiving home-care hospice services from Pax Christi can be admitted to the inpatient unit at any time in an emergency or medical crisis. In addition, eligible patients can be transferred from any medical or residential facility. The only treatment not offered as part of the hospice service is resuscitation.

Saint Vincent's Hospice in the Nursing Home
Through partnerships with selected nursing homes, Saint Vincent's Hospice offers a program of specialized care that enables the resident to remain in a familiar and supportive environment.  The combined team of hospice and nursing-home professionals creates a strong supportive community that helps residents and families achieve comfort and peace of mind when facing end-of-life issues.
