RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES: Research opportunities are ample and always encouraged by the department. Our faculty and residents publish a wide array of journal articles, case reports, pictorial essays and presentations on a yearly basis. Each resident is required to participate in at least one publication throughout the four years of training; however, most residents exceed this minimum requirement within their first year.
FACILITIES: St. Vincent's radiology department is fully equipped with state of the art imaging modalities including two GE high speed multi-detector CT scanners one of these being a 64 MDCT installed in 2007, a GE 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner, all purpose nuclear medicine SPECT gamma cameras, three recently acquired Siemens Acuson digital ultrasound imaging units, and three state of the art interventional radiology imaging suites, one of these housing a biplane fluoroscopy unit typically used for neurointerventional procedures. There are a wide range of all purpose routine x ray and fluoroscopic imaging rooms. Rotation through Saint Vincent's Comprehensive Cancer center provides exposure to PET/CT imaging as well as to a variety of comprehensive breast imaging suites.
With the exception of mammography, the department of radiology is filmless. A new PACS system updated in 2007 has allowed for prompt and efficient communication with physicians and optimal patient care. Our voice automated power scribe dictation system has improved dictation speed and accuracy. New workstations installed in 2007 provide a comfortable teaching and working environment for residents and faculty.
The radiology residents' lounge was renovated in 2009 with new desks and chairs for each resident. The lounge is a popular retreat for research, studying, computer use and relaxation. A private resident refrigerator, microwave, TV room, and personal lockers, as well as a bathroom are part of the lounge amenities. A separate on call room with a personal bed, desk and bathroom is also available.
The radiology library houses a wide source of electronic media and popular radiology texts and study aids such as the Case Review Series, The Requisites Series, and the Diagnostic Imaging Series to name a few. Residents also have access to the St Vincent's Hospital medical library as well as the New York Medical College library.
A recently renovated conference room and a new multimedia center, provide ample space and technology for learning as well as personal and collaborative research endeavors.
