June 16, 2009, New York, NY - This year marks the tenth consecutive year that St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan is conducting its free annual prostate cancer screening for men 50 and older, and men over 40 who are at high-risk for prostate cancer. Beginning on Tuesday, June 23nd, men can receive a free PSA test -prostate-specific antigen test - at seven sites served by St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan.
'This is such an important and easy test for men to get every year to check for prostate cancer,' said Dr. Michael Grasso, chair of urology at St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan. 'Families can encourage their fathers to be tested as part of their Father's Day gift to him. If caught early, prostate cancer is very treatable.'
The PSA test is a simple blood test; St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan will take a blood sample and send the results within 3-4 weeks. Last year, nearly 2,000 men from the community received a free test from St. Vincent's.
According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 192,280 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2009. About 27,360 men will die of this disease. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, behind only lung cancer. However, unlike many cancers, prostate cancer progresses slowly and if caught early, there are several effective treatment options available.
Those interested in receiving the free test can RSVP to 1-800-CARE-421, and walk-ins are also welcome. Testing will be available at the following locations and dates:
