New York, NY, May 9, 2008 - St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan today announced the appointment of Dr. Eric Legome as the chairman of the department of emergency medicine. Dr. Legome brings extensive expertise and knowledge to the position through practice and academic pursuits in the field of emergency medicine.

'Dr. Legome's considerable expertise in the field of emergency medicine will be most valuable in leading our Level 1 Trauma Center and sharing our emergency medicine tradition with the next generation of physicians,' said Henry Amoroso, Saint Vincent's President and CEO. 'We are delighted to welcome him to St. Vincent's.'

Dr. Legome joins St. Vincent's from New York University Medical Center where he was the Director of the NYU/Bellevue Emergency Medicine Residency. He was active in multiple academic and administrative activities including chairing the NYU/Bellevue Combined House Staff Committee and numerous graduate medical education (GME) subcommittees. He also served as the emergency department's trauma director, faculty council representative and representative on multiple hospital and medical school committees. He is active locally and nationally as a lecturer, researcher and editor, concentrating on traumatic emergencies and medical education.

'St. Vincent's has a long, proud history of serving New Yorkers in emergencies. From major tragedies to the daily emergency medical needs of local New Yorkers, St. Vincent's has been there to provide the highest quality of care,' said Dr. Legome. 'I look forward to continuing that tradition and enhancing the patient experience, while insuring that we are providing the best training experience to our resident physicians.'

Prior to NYU, Dr. Legome served as the associate residency director of the Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General/Brigham and Women's Emergency Medicine Residency, and practiced clinically at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He trained in emergency medicine at the Denver Affiliated Residency Program, one of the oldest in the nation, after completing an internship in general surgery at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. He completed college at Emory University and medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

In 2007, St. Vincent's had over 60,000 visits to its emergency department. The emergency department houses one of only five Level I Trauma Centers in New York City, and the only one on the West Side below 114th Street. Level I Trauma Center designation means that there is a physician available in every specialty 24 hours a day, seven days a week to treat the most severely injured or sick patients who come into the emergency department. In addition, St. Vincent's is a New State designated Stroke Center, one of the most advanced and comprehensive stroke centers in the area, with physicians and nurses in the emergency department serving as an integral part of the stroke center team. The emergency department also operates a Fast Track Center, a 10-bed unit intended to evaluate quickly less seriously ill patients such as individuals with cuts and broken bones providing treatment on a timely basis while allowing the emergency room to focus on more seriously ill patients.
