Dr. Spencer Eth Honored by National Alliance on Mental Illness

New York, NY, May 8, 2008 - Dr. Spencer Eth, vice-chairman and medical director of psychiatry and behavioral health services at Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers was honored this week by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) as one of its 2008 Exemplary Psychiatrists. The award was presented during the 2008 American Psychiatric Association's Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Dr. Eth is based at St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan.
Dr. Eth was nominated for the award by the local NYC-Metro chapter of NAMI in recognition of his substantial contributions to local and state NAMI activities, outstanding commitment and expertise, as well as a record of providing excellent clinical care to diverse populations. Only 30 psychiatrists from 21 states who are stars within the nation's mental healthcare system were honored. Dr. Eth was the only psychiatrist from New York to receive this year's distinction. Of those honored, Michael J. Fitzpatrick, NAMI national executive director said, 'They each have shown an exemplary commitment to treatment and recovery for people with severe mental illnesses, who often are among the nation's most vulnerable populations.'
In addition to his roles at St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan, Dr. Eth is a professor at New York Medical College and director of the New York Medical College/St. Vincent's Hospital Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship.
Dr. Eth is the author of numerous articles, chapters and books, and is a member of the editorial boards of several psychiatric journals. He is an active member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), where he has served as chair of the ethics committee as well as the committee on commercial support. He is a member of the board of director for the NYC chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and a member of the Consortium on Terrorism and Psychosocial Preparedness for the LSU Health Sciences Center. Dr. Eth has also testified before the U.S. Senate Health Committee on the psychiatric consequences of the World Trade Center disaster.
Dr. Eth received his M.D. from UCLA, and served his residency at New York Hospital - Cornell Medical Center before completing a fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in child psychiatry. Dr. Eth is also an alumnus of New York University for undergraduate studies and Oxford University for graduate studies as a Rhodes Scholar.
