New York, NY, January 28, 2008 - St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan is committed to keeping New York hearts healthy, both through high-quality cardiac care and community initiatives aimed at prevention and awareness. During national Heart Health Awareness Month in February, the hospital's Department of Community Health Resources will be actively supporting the cause through the following activities:
National Wear Red Day
To kick-off a month of heart-focused initiatives, St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan will celebrate Wear Red Day on Friday, February 1st. Employees are invited to don the color to show support for the national movement to raise awareness of women's risk of heart disease. Information on heart health and Red Dress Pins will be available to employees throughout the day to increase awareness of heart health.
Free Cholesterol Screenings
On February 6th St. Vincent's Department of Community Health Resources will offer free cholesterol screenings at the McBurney YMCA, 125 W. 14th Street. St. Vincent's will continue to offer free blood pressure screenings at this location every month thereafter.
Free cholesterol screenings will also be offered at the Church of the Village, located at 7th Avenue and 13th Street, on February 9th, along with information on smoking cessation programs to encourage people to stop smoking, another risk factor for heart disease.
Sister-to-Sister Heart Health Fair
St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan is once again proud to be the hospital partner of the annual Sister-to-Sister Foundation Heart Health Fair at Madison Square Garden on Friday, February 15th. The event brings women together to raise awareness about the number one killer of women, heart disease, and offer facts and information about ways to reduce your risk. Hospital representatives will be on hand to perform free blood pressure and cholesterol screenings to participants. To learn more about the event or to register, visit www.womansheartday.org and choose 'New York' as your campaign city.
