New York, NY, May 29, 2009 - St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan and Eli Manning held a football clinic for 15 lucky New York City students from Fulton Youth of the Future. Eli Manning donated the clinic as an auction item during St. Vincent's annual fundraiser. A generous donor bid $35,000 on the clinic at the Angelus Gala, and then donated it for use by local deserving youth in the community.
The group of students was chosen to participate through the Fulton Youth of the Future program - young residents from Robert Fulton Houses in Chelsea -- based on improvements in effort and achievements in school. Their reward was Eli Manning, Giants quarterback and past Super Bowl MVP, welcoming them to Chelsea Piers for a football clinic. The clinic featured Eli running drills with the school students and giving them football pointers. Each child received an autographed football from the MVP player.
'The football clinic was made possible by the generosity of a wonderful donor to St. Vincent's who wanted to see the clinic used for a great purpose,' said Henry Amoroso, President and CEO of Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers. 'St. Vincent's is very fortunate to have such great friends, including Eli Manning donating his time to make this a special day for these kids. We are thrilled to be working with Fulton Youth of the Future for this once in a lifetime opportunity to practice with Eli Manning.'
The football clinic was auctioned off in September at the hospital's yearly benefit with Board Chairman Alfred E. Smith, IV as the auctioneer.
St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan works with the Fulton Youth of the Future, the Hudson Guild Adult Services program, and NYCHA to identify the populations' health education needs, and to provide relevant services to the residents served by these programs. St. Vincent's holds health education programs and screenings for the residents of the Robert Fulton Houses, such as flu shots, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings, and information sessions on important health education topics.
