Superovulation is the production of many mature eggs in one
menstrual cycle, usually triggered by a medication that stimulates the ovaries.
Such medications include clomiphene, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and
gonadotropins.
Superovulation with gonadotropins or FSH is monitored closely to
prevent severe ovarian hyperstimulation, a potentially life-threatening
condition.
While superovulation increases the likelihood of conception, it
also increases the risk of becoming pregnant with more than one fetus, such as
twins or triplets.
