Chronic lung disease affects the lungs of newborns, especially those
born early (prematurely). Chronic lung disease-also known as bronchopulmonary
dysplasia (BPD)-results from damage to parts of the newborn's lungs. The
damaged lung tissue traps air or collapses, fills with fluid, and produces
extra mucus.
