Emergency Medicine

In an Emergency, Call 9-1-1
When every second counts, time and expertise mean the difference between life and death. As one of  only five Level I Trauma Centers in Manhattan and the only one south of 14th Street on the west side, we are the major emergency care resource for hundreds of thousands of residents and millions of workers and visitors to lower Manhattan.  Our own, state-of-the-art paramedic ambulances, operating through the New York City 911 EMS system, provide 24-hour coverage to the Lower Manhattan area, and our Institute of Emergency Care  is the oldest continuously operating EMS training center in the New York City region.

Care for the Most Critical Conditions

Staffed by physicians who are board certified in emergency medicine -- who have completed residency training programs at some of the finest institutions in the country -- our department of emergency medicine is exceedingly well qualified to identify and treat the most serious illnesses and injuries. Our Level I Trauma designation -- the highest available -- granted to us by New York State, indicates that our surgeons, board certified in cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and other specialties and subspecialties, are available within minutes to care for the most severely injured or sick patients. In fact, we routinely treat the most critical conditions at a moment's notice and have served as the front line response to many of our city's worst disasters.

Stroke and Cardiac Care
We operate one of the most advanced and comprehensive stroke centers in the area, with physicians and nurses in emergency medicine serving as an integral part of our stroke center team, and we deliver comprehensive cardiac care,  with our team having 24-hour access to a cardiac catheterization lab and some of the finest interventional cardiologists in the area.  In addition, recently released findings by the New York State Department of Health on cardiac surgery show that we have one of the best risk-adjusted mortality rates in the state for coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

Fast Track -- For Minor Illnesses and Injuries  --  See Video
For people with minor illnesses and injuries, who do not have a primary care physician or whose physician is unavailable, we operate a Fast Track area in our emergency department.  Designed for busy New Yorkers who can't wait hours to be seen, this service focuses on comfort and convenience along with high quality medical care. We offer private cubicles, bedside registration, telephones and a radiology suite for faster results.  Our Fast Track area is operational from 8:00 a.m. until midnight,  seven days a week.  No appointment is necessary; just walk in whenever you need help in a hurry!
