Culturally Competent Services


 Services for the Chinese Community
St. Vincent's Hospital has had the honor of serving the Chinatown community with high quality primary and specialty services for more than 30 years. We continually work to enhance these services, which currently include:

  • Language interpreter services in the emergency department and throughout the hospital.
  • Chinese and English bi-lingual volunteers who visit Chinese patients to ensure they are comfortable.
  • Physicians may request volunteers to escort and accompany their patients for appointments in the hospital.
  • Chinese-speaking Hospitalists to provide medical care to hospitalized patients and to maintain the ongoing involvement of the patient's primary care physician throughout the hospitalization.
  • 24/7 Chinese language telephone service (Mandarin and Cantonese) to help patients and their families navigate the healthcare system (1-800-994-7018.)
  • An inpatient unit to include Chinese physicians, Chinese-speaking staff, Chinese menu and ambiance, and acupuncture for pain management.
  • Chinese Satellite Television Stations including The Jade Channel - East, The Jade Channel - West, TVBS, The Chinese Movie Channel and CCTV-4.
  • Menus in Chinese offering conjee daily.
  • St. Vincent's employs some 240 Chinese staff and has 23 Chinese residents in its various residency training programs.
  • Some 178 Chinese physicians, both employed and voluntary, are affiliated with the hospital. 
    They serve in the areas of anesthesiology, cardiology, emergency medicine, endocrinology, family practice, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, internal medicine, nephrology, neurology, nuclear medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, pediatrics, psychiatry, pulmonary diseases, radiation oncology and rheumatology as well as in general surgery and surgical subspecialties.
  • Free van transportation from Chinatown to the hospital and back.
