Over 100 patients receive treatment in the department daily. This volume provides excellent experience in the care of patients with a wide range of acute and chronic disabilities. Among several special clinical programs run by the department are osteoporosis, post mastectomy syndrome, and balance dysfunction. Residents provide direct patient care and coordinate all therapeutic services.
Residents attend New York-based prosthetic and orthotic courses, as well as any of the numerous educational presentations held in the metropolitan area. Membership in the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the New York Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is strongly encouraged to facilitate interaction with other area residents and strengthen their knowledge base through the monthly academic seminars. All residents are mentored and supported by the faculty as they develop required research projects that form the basis for advancing medical knowledge in the field.
Residents in the third and fourth postgraduate years rotate through several facilities. Richmond University Medical Center provides extensive supervised experience in inpatient and outpatient rehabilitative medicine, electro diagnostics, and consultations. Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation are the focus of training here at St. Vincent's Manhattan in the Cardiology and Pulmonary departments. For pediatric rehabilitation experience, residents rotate at the Elizabeth Ann Seton Pediatric Center and for traumatic brain injury experience, they rotate through Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. They also rotate through faculty physiatrists' and orthopedists' offices to learn methods of comprehensive outpatient and sports medicine practice. Intensive experience in outpatient interventional pain management is provided under the supervision of Dr. Julian Sosner, department chairman.
