CALL:
As a level one trauma center in the heart of Manhattan's West Village, the hospital's CT scanners are busy throughout the evening and early morning challenging residents to become efficient, accurate, and resilient radiologists. The overnight call exposes residents predominantly to emergency CT and plain radiography but also to emergency ultrasound and MRI imaging. Residents regard the call experience as invaluable to developing autonomy and self-confidence. The program uses a float system for overnight, weekend, and holiday coverage. The day float resident covers the main reading room alongside a team of faculty radiologist from 8am to 5pm. Subsequently from 5pm to 8pm the day float resident covers the CT reading room on his or her own until the night float resident arrives at 8pm. The night float resident in turn covers from 8pm until 8am. Attending readout takes place at 8am immediately post call. The ACGME duty hours are adhered to at all times and strictly enforced by the program director.

In accordance with the ACGME guidelines junior residents are not allowed to be on call independently until after the first 12 months of radiology training. A "buddy" call system was developed in 2008 to give first year radiology residents the opportunity to experience call alongside a supervising senior resident. Buddy call takes place during the hours of 5pm to 11pm once a week starting in April. The goal is to help transition the first year resident into the call pool with ease.
