Anesthesiology

File #: 040-35-12-109

Sponsor: New York Medical College

Overview

The Anesthesiology Residency at Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers-Saint Vincent's Manhattan dates back to the early 1940's, and is one of the oldest training program in anesthesiology in the state.  This nationally recognized program is a fully approved, four-year continuum sponsored by New York Medical College and is designed to train physicians to be highly skilled Board Certified anesthesiologists.

The program offers a unique clinical setting and has an outstanding reputation as a tertiary care and level-1 trauma center; but just as important, it has a well deserved reputation as a friendly, nurturing institution.  The location is one of the most attractive in Manhattan and the patient population is medically and socially diverse.

In few other areas of medicine does the physician, on a daily basis, see the positive effects of their skills and knowledge when taking care of patients.  Anesthesiology asks the physician to take information from the basic sciences, integrate it with his or her knowledge of medicine and disease, and apply it to an individual patient in a very practical manner in a minute-by-minute time frame.  Alterations in blood pressure and cardiac output, level of consciousness, neuro-muscular transmission, acid-base balance, respiratory function, etc. are made and monitored continually.  This is possible in a large part because anesthesiology is on the leading edge in technological advancement and innovation in patient monitoring,  Electromyography, cerebral function monitoring, transesophageal echocardiography, end-tidal gas analysis with side-stream spirometry, for example are used daily in our operating rooms.

The rapid growth of the specialty of anesthesiology over the last decade has mandated development of subspecialty areas.  The equipment and facilities of our Department are state-of-the-art, and all subspecialty areas are represented on the full-time faculty staff.
