Since 1976, our I. Joseph Aprile Cancer Institute at Mary Immaculate has served as a regional referral center for outstanding cancer treatment. Staffed by a skilled team of board-certified medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, pain management specialists and other physicians, the institute brings together all the disciplines essential for successful treatment.

Radiation Therapy
We employ two types of radiation therapy. External beam, which directs high-energy waves to cancerous cells in order to eradicate them, and brachytherapy, or seed implant therapy. This treatment, in which radioactive seeds are implanted near cancerous cells using ultrasound guidance, allows a high dose of radiation to be delivered to the cancer with limited damage to surrounding tissue. Men with prostate cancer are often treated with brachytherapy because there are generally fewer side effects (like impotence and incontinence) than with other, more traditional treatments.
