Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

At St. Vincent's, we operate a 32-bed acute inpaitent unit.   Please click here for admission, exclusion and discharge criteria.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) cares for patients with disabilities arising from acute and chronic  pain, musculoskeletal problems, traumatic brain injuries, neurologic disorders including stroke, multiple sclerosis, polio and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), with the goal of restoring patients to maximal function. Doctors who specialize in this area are called a physiatrist. Under the umbrella of PMR, there are such disciplines as Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Audiology.

Treatments Offered
At St. Vincent's, we evaluate and treat inpatients and provide comprehensive outpatient services. Our 32-bed Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is dedicated to maximizing function for all patients who suffer disability as a result of traumatic injuries, accidents or debilitating medical conditions.

Under the direction of Dr. Julian Sosner, chairman, the physiatry-led interdisciplinary team constructs highly individualized, one-to-one, and group therapy sessions each day. These interventions are geared toward  promoting the patient's independence and confidence necessary for returning to the community following discharge from our Rehabilitation Unit.

Weekly team conferences, as well as patient and family meetings, provide the forum for ongoing program adjustments consistent with our philosophy of maintaining respect for the individual and their personal goals.

Our interdisciplinary team of professionals includes:

• Physiatrists

• Audiologists
• Rehabilitation Nurses  • Dietitians
• Physical Therapists • Social Workers
• Occupational Therapists • Case Management Staff
• Speech and Language Pathologists • Patient Representatives
• Rehabilitation Psychologists • Pastoral Care Staff
