Neurosurgery

Our technologically advanced neurosurgery service provides the highest level of care to patients with disorders and diseases of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. As a Level I Trauma Center, we are equipped and staffed to deliver expert care efficiently to patients who come into our emergency department with injuries to the brain or spine caused by accidents, falls, sports injuries or violence. We are also one of the few centers in the New York area specializing in the treatment of the painful cranial nerve condition known as "trigeminal neuralgia," or "tic douleureux."

Dr. Richard Raynor Neurosurgical Special Care Unit
Since neurosurgical patients require highly specialized care throughout their hospitalization, our neurosurgical special care unit houses state-of-the-art monitoring equipment to identify the occurrence of elevated intracranial pressure, so our staff can deliver immediate intervention for this condition.

Dr. Richard Raynor Operating Theatre
Our operating theatre provides image guidance capabilities, which allow for the precise localization and resection of intracranial tumors.  In many cases, this permits patients to leave the hospital earlier than usual. In addition, we perform stereotactic biopsies to identify mass lesions in the brain, such as those that occur in AIDS patients, and offer advanced treatment to these patients through our Internationally recognized HIV/AIDS Center .

Neurosurgical Oncology
We take a multidisciplinary approach to treating brain tumors, so our patients benefit from the combined expertise of our neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists and radiation oncologists. Treatment, which depends on the size and type of the tumor, may include neurosurgical removal, or radiosurgery, which offers the precise delivery of radiation to the targeted area while causing very little, if any, damage to healthy tissue.  Radiosurgical procedures are performed in an outpatient setting at our St. Vincent's Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Aneurysms

We deliver advanced evaluation and treatment of patients with intracranial aneurysms including open surgery, to put a clip across the aneurysm.  We may also insert coils in the aneurysm through a small catheter inside the blood vessel -- a highly specialized treatment that fills the aneurysm and prevents it from growing and bursting, and which also minimizes trauma to the surrounding brain tissue.

Are You at Risk for an Aneurysm?
As aneurysms do not generally cause symptoms before they rupture, anyone who has had two first-degree relatives, such as a parent, sibling or child, with an aneurysm, should talk to their doctor about getting tested.  A non-invasive, painless MRI or CT scan can identify the presence of an aneurysm.

Spine Surgery
We take an interdisciplinary approach to spine surgery with team members including neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeons  who specialize in the spine. These operations are performed in our new, dedicated spine-operating suite, which houses the most advanced imaging and instrumentation to provide for real-time imaging of the spine during the operation.
