Curriculum

The continuum of education in anesthesiology consists of four years of training subsequent to the time that the medical degree was awarded.  It includes a twelve month of Clinical Base year and thirty six months of graded and increasingly complex clinical training in anesthesia (CA1-3 years).  The Clinical Base year has been designed to provide the fundamental knowledge base upon which to build a career in anesthesiology.

The 3-year Clinical Anesthesia curriculum consists of experience in Basic Anesthesia Training, Subspecialty Anesthesia Training and Advanced Anesthesia Training.  It is a graded curriculum of increasing difficulty and learning that is progressively more challenging of the resident's intellect and technical skills.  Basic Anesthesia Training is intended to emphasize basic and fundamental aspects of the management of anesthesia.  Subspecialty Anesthesia Training experiences are required in order to emphasize the theoretical background, subject material and practice of sub-disciplines in Pain Medicine, Obstetric Anesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, Neuro-anesthesia, Anesthesia for Outpatient Surgery, Post-anesthesia Care, Regional Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine.

Advanced Anesthesia Training constitutes the CA-3 year.  All residents will complete an academic project under the guidance of a faculty member.  The Resident may pursue one of two tracks.  In the Advanced Clinical Track, residents perform difficult and complex anesthesia procedures and care for seriously ill patients.  Each resident is able to design a curriculum which includes their areas of interest.  Residents may concentrate in one subspecialty area for a maximum of six months.

The Clinical Scientist Track consists of clinical training and research experience during the anesthesia residency.  This option may be fulfilled by completing up to six months of advanced or subspecialty clinical or laboratory investigative experience in the CA-3 year.  It is expected that results of research done will be suitable for presentation at a local, regional or national scientific meeting.
