Training
Staff The Anesthesiology teaching staff consists of twenty-nine full
time faculty. Each faculty member is Board Certified or eligible in
Anesthesiology and all participate actively in the training program. All
the subspecialty areas are represented, and a number of the faculty are
"double-boarded" in either Pain Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics or
Critical Care Medicine. Member of the department are active participants
in the American Board of Anesthesiology and are on the editorial boards of major
anesthesiology journals. Operating
Room Experience The program in Anesthesiology at Saint Vincent's
Manhattan is designed to develop meaningful patient responsibility in resident
training through direct and comprehensive care of patients. The program
fosters graded responsibilities proportionate to the ability and level of
training of each resident. Each resident will participate in approximately
five hundred to six hundred cases per year. We believe this to be an
"optimal" caseload giving the resident a broad experience but allowing
sufficient time to acquire an adequate knowledge base. Didactic
Education
The Operating Room, Pain Medicine Center and Critical Care experience
is supplemented by a comprehensive didactic education program. A variety
of conferences specifically designed for resident education are offered, as well
as a Visiting Professor program to update the staff on current topics
of clinical or academic interest. Simulation Center The department
developed a state-of-the-art Simulation Center with a Laerdal SIMMAN simulation
system. A comprehensive set of simulation scenarios have been developed
which allow residents to "practice" how to manage rare and routine clinical
situations. The Center is also used to teach crisis management and team
building.
Learning
Resources The new Robert G. Hicks, M.D. Memorial Anesthesiology
Library has a large collection of current texts and journals, as well as fully
networked computer system. A large variety of services are available
through the network including MEDLINE literature searches for up-to-the-minute
information on patient care in any subject, advanced simulation programs, word
processing and statistical packages to name a few. Research The Department has an active and productive
research program. The Department has two research associates who help with
the planning, development and conduct of clinical research. All residents
participate in at least one project during their residency. Areas of
focus include neuromuscular blocking drugs, neurophysiological monitoring, pre
procedure testing protocols and obstetrical anesthesia. University
Affiliation Saint Vincent's Manhattan is academic medical center of
New York Medical College and all the faculty have academic appointments at the
College. The attending faculty are engaged in education and research at
both the hospital and College. The Department provides core educational
experiences for NYMC students during their third and fourth years. In
addition, a four to eight week elective is offered to fourth-year
students. Outcome Residents completing the program do very well
in the American Board of Anesthesiology examination process. The five-year
board pass rate is approximately 90%. Graduating residents obtain
positions in prestigious fellowships or join desirable private practice
positions.
