Program Benefits

Patient Care Experience

The patient care experience is provided in a department that has an average daily census of over 300 inpatients with a wide variety of acute and chronic diseases. There are approximately 10,000 medical admissions, 60,000 annual emergency room visits and 30,000 ambulatory care visits a year in the general medical, primary care, and medical subspecialty clinics. Approximately 55% of the patients are private and the other 45% non-private on the medical teaching services.

The patient load and mix on each teaching service is maintained in such a way as to provide a well-balanced educational experience and not unduly burden the resident. Beside teaching is emphasized.

HIV Center

The HIV Center is responsible for both an outpatient HIV clinic and inpatient HIV care. These programs are not primarily supported by house staff but rather by a dedicated attending physician, nurse practitioners, and social worker staff committed to the highest quality patient care and trained in the special needs of patients with HIV infection.

University Affiliation

Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers is the academic medical center of New York Medical College in New York City and all the faculty have academic appointments at the college. The attending faculty are engaged in education and research at both the hospital and university. The department provides core education experiences for New York Medical College first-year students in the primary care preceptorship program, second-year students in physical diagnosis, third-year students in the medical, primary care and the generalist clerkships and fourth-year students as medical sub-interns or on specialty electives. In addition, fourth-year medical students are offered a large variety of clinical and research medical electives.

Scholarly Activity and Research

All residents participate in the scholarly activities of the department. Each resident is expected to prepare case presentations, journal clubs, literature reviews or participate in original research.

The department has an active clinical and basic science research program. Residents are encouraged to participate in on-going projects with the faculty. There are currently over 100 research projects conducted in the department and approximately 50 reports are published each year by the house staff and faculty of the department.
