Resources and Facilities

The Department of Medicine has a 150-year tradition of providing high quality primary and tertiary health care for patients referred from throughout the New York metropolitan area as well as its community on the Lower West Side of Manhattan. It provides an experienced, academically sound faculty including 80 full-time and more than 300 voluntary attending physicians.

Medical staff and faculty appointments are available at St. Vincent's and New York Medical College for graduates of the residency program who wish to continue their medical careers in New York City.

Located in Manhattan's cosmopolitan Greenwich Village, St. Vincent's is in close proximity to the extraordinary range of cultural, social, and education resources of New York City. Conveniently located subsidized housing is guaranteed for all categorical residents in the Internal Medicine program.

Learning Resources

The medical library of St. Vincent's subscribes to approximately 300 periodic journals and maintains a textbook and monographed collection of over 6,500 up-to-date volumes. The library is part of a computerized inter-library network electronically connected to hundreds of libraries in the tri-state area, including all medical schools and universities, as well as the New York Academy of Medicine and National Library of Medicine. Computerized software and audio-visual hardware are available for house staff literature searches. The library computer terminals are connected to the hospital's academic network which gives residents access to the New York Medical College library and its extensive resources and to the Internet. All residents receive an Internet E-mail address. The Department of Medicine maintains a library with current texts in its education office as well as mini-libraries on the Coleman and Spellman medical service for quick reference by residents. The department of medicine library contains computer terminals with CD-ROM capability and access to the academic network. Word processing, database management and biostatistical packages are available, along with presentation software.
