The Pulmonary Medicine Section is a thriving division of the Department of Internal Medicine. The physicians are involved in the care of patients with all types of respiratory disorders, and they have particular expertise in the areas of lung cancer, diseases of  immuno-compromised patients, including HIV-related lung diseases, and problems of the airways such as emphysema, asthma, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency and cystic fibrosis.

The attendings are active in the training of the pulmonary/critical care medicine fellows as well as internal medicine residents. We operate an active chest clinic, staffed by our pulmonary fellows, internal medicine residents and pulmonary attendings, and many medical students rotate through the clinic. All our pulmonary attendings also operate private offices in the area.

Services:
The Pulmonary Section treats all types of lung diseases, and patients come to us through multiple venues, including the pulmonary clinic, individual practitioners' private offices, the pulmonary function laboratory and the multidisciplinary lung cancer clinic at our Comprehensive Cancer Center, which is staffed by attendings from Pulmonary Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology and Thoracic Surgery.

Pulmonary Function Laboratory
The pulmonary function laboratory is a full service laboratory offering standard pulmonary function testing, pulmonary exercise testing, arterial blood gas measurement and methacholine challenge testing. A full service sleep laboratory will open in the near future. In addition to standard bronchoscopy we also offer several innovative bronchoscopic modalities, including  superdimension bronchoscopy, auto-fluorescence bronchoscopy and airways stenting.

Fellowship Program:
The Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine Fellowship is a three-year, comprehensive fellowship covering all of the aspects of the practice of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. The graduates are well trained and have been placed in both academic and private practice positions. There are 4 fellowships available and the program participates in both the Match and the ERAS programs. Inquiries into the fellowship program can be directed to Dr. Patricia Tietjen at Ptietjen@svcmcny.org or (212) 604-2757.
