Overview

A freestanding department within St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan., the department of neurosurgery has its own office, dedicated conference room and many other educational facilities. There is a designated neurosurgery floor, intensive care unit and operating room. The house staff includes a chief resident in neurosurgery, who is usually a PGY –3 or – 4 resident from the accredited neurosurgery training program of New York Medical College, a rotating surgical intern and two surgical house officers. The chief resident and one of the surgical house officers are always on call for emergency room and neurosurgery patients. They reside within the hospital while on call. The hospital is also a Level I Trauma Center.

The department of neurosurgery has excellent support from a number of other departments within the hospital. The full-fledged, independent department of neurology has its own residency program. There is a neuroradiology division with three neuroradiologists and a neuropathology division with two neuropathologists, a neuro-otologist and neuro-ophthalmologist.
