Overview
The residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Vincent's Hospital
Manhattan is a four-year program sponsored by New York Medical College. There
are two first-year categorical post-graduate trainees and one first-year
preliminary post-graduate position. Appointments are offered to graduates of
accredited medical schools or other candidates meeting AMA specifications for
approved residencies. Applications are only accepted through the Electronic
Residency Application Service (ERAS). For additional information, visit their
web site at www.aamc.org.
St. Vincent's, an academic medical center of New York Medical College, is
also the location for the medical college's Department of Obstetrics and
Gynecology. This makes St. Vincent's the focus of undergraduate, as well as
graduate medical education in obstetrics and gynecology. The residency program
is one of the most progressive in the metropolitan area, having set precedents
in comprehensive care for women. The department, evolving with the growing and
changing dynamics of the specialty, offers state-of-the-art technology,
innovative procedures and experienced staff. The Antepartum Testing Unit and
participation in the Comprehensive Cancer Center are just two examples of this
dedication to women's health services.
As the academic teaching site for New York Medical College, the department of
obstetrics and gynecology provides clinical clerkships for third-year medical
students. Electives are offered for fourth-year medical students. In addition,
the department participates in teaching rotating physicians from various family
practice and primary care residencies in the metropolitan area as well as
transitional residents from SVCMC.
The department has eight birthing rooms, two delivery/operating rooms, 24
post-partum beds, and six dedicated gynecology beds (additional gyn beds are
located on other floors). With over 1,800 births, 600 gynecology admissions, 400
ambulatory surgeries, plus external rotations at affiliated hospitals in the
metropolitan region, residents receive extensive clinical exposure and
experience in caring for a variety of patients.
The department is divided into
the following divisions: obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, gynecology,
ambulatory medicine, gynecologic oncology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. In addition
to the chairman, the department consists of seven full-time attendings responsible for general
obstetrics and gynecology plus all the recognized subspecialty areas, five
part-time attendings, four nurse midwives, and two nurse practitioners. The department also
has an extensive network of voluntary attending physicians. All staff attendings
are offered an academic teaching appointment at New York Medical
College.
Attending rounds in both obstetrics and gynecology are conducted daily. Grand
Rounds occur weekly, presented by attending staff, residents, or guest
lecturers. Journal Club is conducted by residents in conjunction with full-time
attendings. Each Thursday there is a formal Resident Education Schedule covering
all areas of OB/GYN and General Medicine through an interdisciplinary approach.
Residents are required to present a paper on research he or she has performed
during the course of the residency.
The department's commitment to professional and personal growth has as its
focus the improvement of health care for all women. It has long been the
department's central philosophy to teach effectively and to achieve excellence
in patient care. Through quality patient care, dedicated teaching, and
innovative research, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St.
Vincent's has developed a residency program that will prepare its trainees to
provide comprehensive care to women of all ages.
