Obstetricians and gynecologists are increasingly becoming primary care
providers for women, expanding their role in health maintenance, prevention, and
screening. This sometimes includes providing treatment for disorders beyond the
reproductive system. Given this trend, primary care education is an important
component of all OB/GYN residency programs.
At St. Vincent's, the role of primary care within obstetrics and gynecology
is emphasized. Residents attend Continuity Clinics all four years of residency
and complete rotations in medicine ambulatory care clinics. A major emphasis in
the program is gynecologic surgical experience and expansion of the operative
endoscopic training program in gynecology. In addition to providing primary
gynecologic care, residents also perform routine assessments, physical
examinations, diagnostic studies, screening, immunizations, and patient
education and counseling.
