The ophthalmology residency at St. Vincent's
Hospital Manhattan has a long tradition of excellence. Founded in 1958 by Dr.
Ramon Castroviejo, a pioneer in corneal transplantation, the residency program
has enjoyed steady expansion and development. This legacy continues under the
chairmanship of Dr. Robert D'Amico, a distinguished corneal surgeon, who
succeeded Dr. Castroviejo in 1970. Today, the department includes over 20
ophthalmologists with subspecialty training in cornea, retina, oculoplastic,
glaucoma, pediatric,and neuro-ophthalmology.
The department has
impressive depth in the subspecialties of ophthalmology, offering clinics for
corneal and retinal diseases, glaucoma, pediatric
ophthalmology and strabismus problems, ophthalmic plastic surgery, neuro-ophthalmology and contact
lens problems.
Accreditation St. Vincent's ophthalmology residency program is a fully
approved, three-year program that enrolls three residents per year and is
sponsored by the New York Medical College. Approximately 400 applications are
received and 60 interviews are granted. The program has a long standing
excellent reputation. The majority of residents go on to subspecialty
training at major academic centers around the country.
The ophthalmology residency
at St. Vincent's combines the academic and surgical experience of
a major national medical center with
the individual care, compassion and sense of community of a
smaller institution.
