Rotations Residents rotate between St. Vincent's Manhattan
and Staten Island where they see patients with a wide variety of ocular
pathology. In their third year,
residents have a choice of doing an international rotation for 4 weeks. For the last years, residents have
chosen to rotate through the
Aravind Hospital in Madurai, India.
First-year residents participate in
daily clinics, where they learn the principles and
techniques of ophthalmic examination, diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. They also
gain hands-on experience with contact lens fitting and perform
minor surgical procedures. Second-year residents have increased
responsibility, rotating as Clinic Chief at each
institution. They perform extraocular procedures and laser surgery under the supervision of
an attending ophthalmologist, and assist with intraocular procedures in
the operating room. Third year residents are primarily
assigned to the operating room, performing major ocular surgery as primary
surgeons in all subspecialties. All resident surgery is supervised by a
board-certified attending. First and second-year
residents share first-call duties. Third year residents act as second call and
an attending ophthalmologist is always available for supervision.
Residents are encouraged to take early ownership in all aspects of their
training, from clinical duties to independent learning to constant improvement
of clinic and patient care functions.
Didactics The didactic curriculum for the residents has expanded
greatly in the past several years. Weekly professors' rounds discuss cases of
educational interest from the previous week. Didactic lectures in ocular
pathology, pediatric ophthalmology, neuro-o
phthalmology and other topics are given on a weekly to bi-weekly basis. First
year residents are provided with the American Academy of Ophthalmology Basic and
Clinical Science course for independent study. Dedicated time blocks in
which residents are free of clinical duties occur every other week for board
review and preparatory lectures. First year residents attend the month-long
Ophthalmology Basic Science course held at Columbia University Medical
Center. All residents attend the Greater New York Ophthalmology Clinical
Lecture Series, a six-month series of weekly evening lectures on
state-of-the-art developments in ophthalmology as well as the intensive New York
Eye and Ear Infirmary OKAP review course. First-
and second-year residents attend a weekly ocular oncology clinic at Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Third year residents attend the American Academy
of Ophthalmology annual meeting and the Wills Eye Hospital Ophthalmology Board
Review. All residents are also encouraged to engage in research
activities in collaboration with attending ophthalmologists from the
department.
Grand Rounds Grand rounds are held weekly
and consist of a resident case presentation followed by a guest speaker. Journal
club is held once a month and residents present and discuss important
articles with subspecialty attendings.
Advanced Equipment The
outpatient ophthalmology clinic is fully equipped with slit-lamp biomicroscopes,
indirect ophthalmoscopes, A and B-scan, ultrasound, pachymetry, Humphrey and
Goldmann visual field machines, OCT, autorefractors, an electrophysiology suite,
corneal topographer, digital fluorescein angiography and fundus photography, and
a microscope for minor surgical procedures. A second suite located in main
hospital, consists of three large rooms, utilized for inpatient examination
and treatment. It is equipped with slit-lamp biomicroscopes, indirect ophthalmoscopes,
B-scan ultrasound, YAG and argon lasers, and a microscope
for minor procedures. Attending
