Resources and Facilities

Inpatient facilities include a 15-bed pediatric ward with a four-bed pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). There is a 15-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).  The inpatient pediatric unit averages 800 admissions a year. There are over 1,400 admissions to the newborn nursery annually. Pediatric outpatient services are provided in our ambulatory care center and in our pediatric emergency room. There are approximately 12,000 Pediatric outpatient visits and over 6,000 Pediatric ER visits annually.

The ambulatory care center accommodates general pediatric walk-ins and has specialty services for adolescents and neonatal high-risk follow-ups. Pediatric subspecialty clinics are led by pediatric subspecialty faculty in each of the following disciplines: cardiology, hematology/oncology, allergy/immunology, rheumatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, genetics, neurology and infectious disease. Residents rotate through these clinics during both their ambulatory care and subspecialty rotations. The surgical subspecialties are also well represented, and residents attend the pediatric sessions for such clinics as orthopedics, ophthalmology and ENT.

The newly renovated NICU provides services to high-risk, low-birthweight and pre-term infants who are born at St. Vincent's.  The latest treatment modalities, such as high-frequency/oscillatory ventilation and nitric oxide, are provided by our three full-time neonatologists.

We are fortunate to have on-site pediatric surgery, pediatric orthopedics, pediatric ENT, and pediatric urology attendings. Ancillary services, such as phlebotomy and IV teams are available to optimize patient care. In addition, we have an active Child Life Program, a Reach Out and Read Program, a NYC Board of Education hospital-based teacher, and a strong Parent Education Program.

Several other facilities affiliated with St. Vincents Hospital Manhattan provide additional experiences for the pediatric residents. The Cystic Fibrosis Center, one of the largest centers for patients with cystic fibrosis in the region, provides both inpatient and outpatient training for the pediatric housestaff. The Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center (formerly New York Foundling Hospital), which houses a skilled nursing facility for infants and children with chronic handicapping conditions, provides exposure to a diverse spectrum of patients with a wide variety of developmental needs.

St Vincents Hospital Manhattan is the academic medical center of New York Medical College (NYMC) in New York City and provides pediatric clinical clerkships for third year NYMC medical students. Pediatric electives and sub-internships are available to interested fourth year students.
