The Maxwell Institute in Tuckahoe, New York, offers outpatient chemical dependency treatment and education services for adults, adolescents and their families. Treatment includes individual and group psychotherapy, family counseling, psychiatric evaluation and medication when indicated. The Maxwell Institute's treatment programs are entirely consistent with outside community-based support groups, and clients are encouraged to attend these self-help activities. We welcome individuals and family members who are experiencing marital and/or work-related distress as a result of their dependency. The following are the ten pillars of The Maxwell Institute, representing the programs through which Maxwell realizes its mission:

1.  Comprehensive Assessment
Help begins with the initial consultation to determine  the care most appropriate
to meet the individual needs of the client.

2. Intensive Outpatient Program
The program provides a unique and rewarding treatment program for clients
with more complex problems.

3. Early Evening Recovery Program
Meeting three times weekly from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the program is ideal
for clients whose work schedules do not permit them to attend the day programs.

4. Employee Assistance Treatment Program
In group sessions, the emphasis is on a supportive reality therapy. Consequences
of drinking and drug use are stressed, along with likely future consequences
if the behavior continues. The relapse process is examined and relapse
prevention skills and tools are learned.

5. Women's Program
The women's program empowers women to make changes in their lives and
discover who they really are and what they want. By being with other women in
treatment, female alcoholics and other addicts quickly identify with each other's life
experiences, behavioral patterns, emotions and attitudes.

6. Significant Others Program
Significant others often have strong feelings of anger and resentment
when their addict or alcoholic partner is actively involved with drugs or alcohol.
Maxwell's family services are designed to help couples work through these
feelings and behavioral patterns and to learn communication skills they will need
to reestablish intimacy and to heal the tears in the fabric of their relationships.

7. Executive Professional Program
The Executive Professional Program has provided services to acitive and retired
public school teachers, college professors, lawyers, nurses, musicians, writers, and
executives from area companies

8. Adolescent Treatment Program
Group psychotherapy sessions educate adoelscents about substance abuse
while helping them learn the skills they will need to deal with their
difficultiesin emotional and interpersonal relationships.

9. Psychiatric Services
For some persons with chemical dependency problems, sobriety alone does not
lead to a resolution of psychiatric problems. Maxwell provides help for patients
with co-occurring psychiatric disorders so they can achieve a stable recovery.

10. Community Education Program
Maxwell's community education services provide current thinking and information
about adolescent binge drinking, bullying, social skills training and other topics
for parents, teachers, clergy, social service agencies and other groups.
the presentations are designed to meet the needs of each audience.

The Maxwell Institute also offers MAXTRAIN , a 350-hour certification program for individuals who wish to become a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) in New York State. To read our brochure, click here.
