Overview The training program in rehabilitation medicine prepares the resident to practice the medical management of disabled individuals, emphasizing restoration of function. The resident learns to evaluate disability and residual function and to establish a comprehensive program of restoration that includes goal setting, rehabilitation prescription, and non-surgical intervention. The training program emphasizes the concept and practice of interdisciplinary teamwork, in which the resident is trained to collaborate with other medical and allied health care specialists to achieve the goals of rehabilitation. The residency program in rehabilitation medicine at St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan provides a unique opportunity for the future physiatrist to master the principles and skills necessary for a fulfilling and rewarding career in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Prerequisite to entrance in the training program at St. Vincent's Manhattan is one postgraduate year in one or combination of the primary care disciplines. Completion of the PGY-1 internship at St. Vincent's satisfies this requirement.
