Fellowships
The Department of Psychiatry offers fellowships in Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Forensic
Psychiatry.
The Child and Adolescent Fellowship is a two-year accredited
program, which includes a rich clinical and academic experience. The Child
Division is one of only two in New York City having an in-patient unit for
children 12 and under. Fellows are assigned to community sites such as the
family court, neighborhood public schools, state children's hospitals and other
outreach agencies for this population.
Geriatric Psychiatry Fellows do consultations in the Saint
Vincent's Geriatric Medicine In-patient and Outpatient Services, and a variety
of community sites such as senior citizens centers, senior residences and
transitional residences for the homeless elderly with mental
illness.
The Forensic Psychiatry fellowship program was begun in 1997 and
is one of only three forensic fellowships in New York City. The program
trains two forensic fellows a year and includes exposure to mental health court,
Riker's Island Correctional Facility, a comprehensive curriculum, teaching
experiences and inclusion in many of the forensic faculty's private
cases.
Research
Research activity is always encouraged by the Department of
Psychiatry. Scientific research is incorporated into the clinical and
educational programs of the Department and its residency training
programs.
All residents attend a weekly Journal Club where articles are
discussed and critiqued for their scientific merit. All trainees have a course
on scientific research methodology. PGY-2 residents present a
PowerPoint presentation during their consult liaison rotation and PGY-3 and
PGY-4 residents write up psychodynamic case formulations. The salaries
and other benefits are the same as those for the rest of St. Vincent's house
staff and are listed separately. Hospital housing is available, although
not guaranteed. Salary supplements are paid to those who are unable or
wish not to live in hospital housing.
