Psychiatry - Child and Adolescent

File #: 405-35-22-092

Sponsor: New York Medical College

Overview

The New York Medical College Residency Training Program in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at St. Vincent?s Hospital Manhattan provides a comprehensive educational and training experience in each of two years of training in an academic medical center serving an ethnically and socio-economically diverse patient population. St. Vincent?s is a university teaching hospital of New York Medical College, which is the sponsoring institution for the program.

The residency training program in child and adolescent psychiatry at St. Vincent?s Hospital has been in continuous operation since 1976 as a component of the department of psychiatry. It is an affiliate of the residency training program in psychiatry at St. Vincent?s, and is fully accredited by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Graduates have pursued a wide range of clinical, academic, administrative and research careers in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry.

The primary clinical site for the program is St. Vincent?s Hospital Manhattan where residents have clinical rotations in child and adolescent psychiatric inpatient and outpatient programs, pediatric consultation and emergency settings. The hospital is located in historic Greenwich Village, and residents gain experience in school consultation at a public elementary school located across the street from the hospital and at other schools in Manhattan.

Rotations in the first year of training include an adolescent day treatment setting at South Beach Psychiatric Center, which is an affiliated institution of the training program, and at the Staten Island Family Court, where forensic mental health services are provided by staff of South Beach Psychiatric Center. South Beach Psychiatric Center is located on Staten Island, a community that differs from Greenwich Village and Manhattan in demographic and socio-cultural features, and is readily accessible from St. Vincent?s Hospital by public transportation.

The teaching faculty for the program includes salaried and voluntary members of the multidisciplinary staffs of St. Vincent?s Hospital and South Beach Psychiatric Center. All attending psychiatrists in the program are fully trained in child and adolescent psychiatry, and most have achieved certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) in this subspecialty.
