The duration of the program is one year. The curriculum includes at least six
months of each resident's training in disciplines offering fundamental clinical
skills such that a broad scope of medical educational experience is provided in
internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics or general surgery.
Experience in emergency care and ambulatory care is also provided for each
transitional year resident. Elective rotations are determined by the needs of
the individual resident and/or the requirements of their future specialty
program. The curriculum is planned and balanced according to these individual
needs and with the guidance of the program director and institutional
coordinating committee. All resident rotations are on clinical services where
they are supervised by the faculty and senior residents in the other
ACGME-accredited residency programs at St. Vincent's. Transitional year
residents are afforded the same responsibilities and privileges of the category
PGY I residents in these programs
The transitional year experience is of the same high quality as accorded the
other ACGME residence programs. The St. Vincent's faculty is dedicated to
maintaining the highest standards of educational experience for the transitional
resident, and the educational resources of the 30 ACGME-approved residency and
specialty programs are available as training experiences for the transitional
resident. The transitional year program is a long-standing and well-recognized
tradition at St. Vincent's.
