New Facilities
In May 2002, we moved our Family Practice Center to a newer, more modern
facility at St. Dominics Family Health Center. It is located near the corner of
Linden and Sutphin Boulevards in the heart of inner city Jamaica, Queens. St.
Dominics is located in a federally qualified Health Professional Shortage Area
(HPSA), which means, we are in a very medically underserved section of New York.
Consequently, residents care for a sicker patient population in the Family
Practice Center and in the hospital. Our location also affords us the
opportunity to establish much closer contacts with the community, especially the
schools, churches and health agencies. Conferences and
Lectures
Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs and
one-on-one instruction are integral parts of our residency program. The program
provides daily lectures throughout the year, covering a variety of topics. In
addition, case presentation, board review, and other conferences take the entire
Thursday afternoon. Lectures are given by a variety of specialists and family
physicians. Behavioral science is well integrated to the curriculum, and
utilizes case presentations and seminars throughout all three years. Our monthly
grand rounds incorporate private family physicians from the community.
Primary Care Research
The department of family medicine is committed to providing the required
skills and administrative support to facilitate resident research. All residents
are required to do a community medicine/research project. In 2002 the research
projects of all seven graduating residents were accepted for presentation at the
New York State Academy of Family Physicians Annual Resident Research Forum. Our
residents received three of the four prizes awarded. In 2003 we had eight
resident presentations at regional conferences and in 2004 five such
presentations so far.
