FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions about New York Medical College's Infectious Diseases Program at St. Vincent Catholic Medical Centers

Q: Do you consider International Medical Graduates for admission into your program? 
A: Yes. Only U.S. citizens and green card holders. We are unable to sponsor any visa candidates.

Q: Do you have a minimum USMLE score for your program?
A: Yes. > 80 for either Step 1, 2 or 3.   

Q: Does the number of post medical school graduation years matter?
A: Yes. To be considered for July of any year, the applicant should not have graduated from a medicine residency or fellowship more than one year prior to the start of our fellowship. 

Q: Do you require the applicants to have clinical experience in the United States? 
A: Completion of an ACGME Accredited Internal Medicine Residency is an absolute requirement. 

Q: Do you accept applications by mail?  ERAS?
A: We will accept applications only through ERAS. We no longer accept applications by mail. Correspondence otherwise through mail or e-mail is acceptable (e-mail preferable).  Ms. Linda Rhodes can be reached by e-mail at lrhodes@svcmcny.org or by phone at 718-558-7291.

Q: What is the deadline to submit an application?
A: We usually interview for positions in the months of February through April one year prior to the start of your fellowship.  We begin to accept applications the December before the interviewing period.  We accept fellows in our program only through the Subspecialty Match.

Q: How many letters of recommendation are needed? Must the letters of recommendations be from US references? 
A: Three letters of recommendations from US references are absolutely necessary. These must include one from your Program Director, be current, and preferably at least one from should also be from an ID attending. 

Q: Must the applicant be ECFMG-certified? 
A: All international graduates must have an ECFMG certificate, which is valid indefinitely.

Q: Does your medicine program offer other fellowships?
A: We also have approved fellowships in cardiology, geriatrics, and pulmonary medicine.

Q: Once selected through the match are there any conditions that prevent hiring? |
A: Although the match is a legal contract, all employees of SVCMC must pass a pre-employment physical including drug testing and well as background (criminal) checks prior to being hired. In addition, fellow's credentials must all be in order prior to employment.
