Additional medications that doctors may use to treat the symptoms of
hyperthyroidism include:
- Beta-blocker medications, including propranolol
(such as Inderal), atenolol (Tenormin), or metoprolol (Lopressor), to control a
fast heartbeat, tremors, sweating, and nervousness. Your doctor may prescribe
one of these medicines while you are waiting for antithyroid medicine or
radioactive iodine treatment to start working.
- Medicated eyedrops,
if your eyes are irritated.
- Corticosteroid medications, to control
any pain or swelling in the thyroid gland.
