Facts about women and heart disease:
- Almost one in 12 women die of heart or blood vessel disease
- After age 50, women begin to develop and die of heart disease at a rate equal to men
- African-American women face a greater threat from heart disease than women of other races
- 38 percent of women who die suddenly from coronary artery disease had no previous symptoms
- Some diagnostic tests and procedures, including the exercise stress test, or stress ECG, may be less accurate for women than for men.
Symptoms for women:
Warning signs for women are different than they are for men -- and they can be far more subtle. They include:
- Feeling breathless
- Flu-like symptoms, specifically nausea, clamminess, or cold sweats
- Unexplained fatigue, weakness or dizziness
- Pain in upper back, shoulders, neck or jaw
- Feelings of anxiety
