Our thoracic surgeons are dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the chest, lung, trachea, mediastinum and esophagus, including, motor disorders, swallowing and airway problems, emphysema, myasthenia gravis, acid reflux disease (GERD), esophageal and lung cancer.
Because lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, our surgeons work closely in a multidisciplinary fashion with other specialists, including oncologists, radiation therapists and pulmonary medicine specialists to provide the most comprehensive and effective diagnosis and treatment of this disease. Regularly scheduled multidisciplinary tumor board conferences convene these specialties to discuss each patent's case before, during and after treatment to ensure that the appropriate management is used.
To pinpoint lung cancer more safely and in its early stages when treatment is most effective, St. Vincent's Comprehensive Cancer Center was the first medical center in New York to house the superDimension/Bronchus system (Super D). During the same procedure, physicians can also biopsy the lymph nodes in the chest, staging the cancer without having to subject patients to surgery or needle biopsy.

Groundbreaking Procedure
Now, our pulmonary medicine specialists have broken new ground with the Super D. They have developed a means of tattooing lung nodules too tiny to be seen using standard minimally invasive surgical procedures so that our surgeons can now identify, without having to use a larger incision, the nodules that require wedge biopsies, thus sparing patients the pain and complications of more invasive surgery.
A Focus on the Most Minimally-Invasive Surgical Procedures
With a strong focus on improving the quality of patients' lives, reducing pain and discomfort, and achieving the best outcomes, we place a strong emphasis on minimally-invasive surgical techniques, such as video-assisted thorascoscopy, which permits surgeons to complete procedures through very small incisions, whenever possible.

A note about lung cancer
Our surgeons want you to know that when lung cancer is detected early, patients have a much better survival rate. If you are a current or former smoker or have a family history of lung cancer, please talk to your doctor about screening for this disease.
