Eligibility and Admissions


APPLICATION ELIGIBILITY
St. Vincent's is affiliated with four Colleges and Universities: Pace University (24 Credits Awarded) College of Staten Island (32 Credits Awarded) Mercy College (30 Credits Awarded) and Fairleigh Dickinson University (32 Credits Awarded).

These institutions grant a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or related science at the completion of the hospital program.

Also eligible to apply for admission are:

  • Students from non-affiliated colleges or universities with programs similar to those of St. Vincent's affiliated programs.
  • Individuals who have already completed their B.S. degree in a related field.

PREREQUISITES FOR ADMISSION
To be considered for admission, a student must have completed a minimum of 90 semester hours of academic credit at a college or university approved by a recognized accrediting agency.  The prerequisite college credit must include 16 semester hours of biology, 16 semester hours of chemistry and a course in mathematics.

Chemistry
These courses must have solid academic content and may not be survey courses. Courses encompass areas such as organic chemistry/biochemistry.

Biology
These courses must have solid academic content and may not be survey courses.  Courses encompass areas such as anatomy/physiology, immunology, genetics/molecular biology and microbiology.

Mathematics
The course filling this requirement should be taken at the highest level for which the student is prepared.  Courses encompass areas such as statistics.

Updating Course Work in Microbiology and Chemistry
Applicants who completed the program's requirements seven or more years before application must update their academic preparation in a manner acceptable to the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).  This update may be satisfied in one of the following ways:

  1. Taking equivalent courses in microbiology and chemistry acceptable toward a major by the college or university, earning a grade of C or better on completion. 
  2. Obtaining equivalent credit earned by passing a challenge examination by arrangement with the college or university faculty with at least a C grade.


CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION
There is no discrimination with respect to race, religion, sex, disability, age, national origin, marital status, creed, sexual orientation or citizen status.  Admission to the program is based upon:

  1. Completion of the necessary prerequisites established by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) as well as those required by the college or university granting the degree. These requirements may be in progress or planned at the time of application and selection, but must be successfully completed prior to admission. 
  2. A grade point average of 2.75 in both overall coursework and science/math is strongly desired.
  3. Interview by the Educational Coordinator and/or Faculty Admission Committee.
  4. Academic and personal references.
  5. Previous experience (MLT or volunteer work).
  6. Affiliation status of the college or university the student is attending.

A student must be eligible for a baccalaureate degree at the completion of the clinical program at St. Vincent's Hospital.  The degree is awarded by the College or University in which the student is currently enrolled. St. Vincent's will award a certificate to these students and those entering the program with a degree upon successful completion of the program.

Applicants possessing a Bachelor of Science degree and foreign graduates must satisfy the above criteria in accordance with the specifications set by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). 

  • Application for admission should be filed at least six months before the program begins.  The application deadline is December 1st.  In order to complete the application process, the Educational Coordinator must have the application, letters of reference and all college transcripts.
  • An appointment for an interview will be made after the application has been received.  Interviews are usually held in January.

Students from Non-Affiliated Universities Must Also Submit:

  1. All transcripts plus a school catalogue with course descriptions and program curriculum.
  2. A nonrefundable fee for transcript review (submit directly to the Educational Coordinator). 

Graduates of Foreign Colleges/Universities
Approved evaluation of credentials from the International Education Research Foundation Credentialing Evaluation Service is required. This must include U.S. degree equivalency and courses with U.S. grade equivalencies. Information and an application may be obtained by writing to:

The completed "course by course" report should be forwarded directly to the Educational Coordinator, Department of Laboratories.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The position requires considerable walking, standing and sitting.  Good visual acuity and manual dexterity are essential to performing and interpreting laboratory tests.  Good listening and communication skills are necessary in the clinical setting, where students will be required to answer telephone calls, assist in interviewing blood donors and interact with various hospital staff.  In the classroom setting, students will participate in classroom discussions and presentations.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants accepted into the program must:

  • 1. Obtain professional liability insurance
  • 2. Provide proof of medical insurance coverage
  • 3. Provide a completed official college/university transcript
  • 4. Purchase required textbooks
  • 5. Submit a nonrefundable acceptance fee

TUITION
Tuition per year is subject to change.  Students enrolled in an affiliated college or university will pay their tuition according to guidelines agreed to by St. Vincent's Hospital and the individual college or university.
